Additional Thought
After reading through my post I suddenly remembered something else. A long time ago I read a fantasy-romance kind of book:
The Prophecy of the Gems by Flavia Bujor, a then 14-y/o French girl whose book had been a great hit in her homeland. In it, one of the main characters (I think it was Amber), noted something along these lines: that a man who had once totally belonged to the Dark but had returned to the Light was stronger than a man who had been in the Light all along; because the first man had the strength and bravery to renounce his wrong ways and return to the right path. We all know how hard it is to admit that we are wrong; it is harder to apologise for our sins and do what is right instead, even if it is easier to do the wrong thing.
I'll come running,
